SEC Championship injury update; Whoâs in or out for Alabama-Georgia?
It’s almost that time. Once again, Alabama football will meet Georgia for a Southeastern Conference Championship. Saturday’s game will kick off at 3 p.m. CT in Atlanta. But who will be active for the Tide and Bulldogs?
Both Nick Saban and Kirby Smart have had to manage key injuries in the days leading up to the game, which will be the last to air on CBS. Each coach played coy during press conferences when reporters inquired about their availability. So when both sides took the field about 90 minutes before kickoff, eyes scanned the field to see who was warming up.
For the Crimson Tide, running back Jase McClellan went through light drills inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium for initial stretching. When the Tide returned to the field in uniform, McClellan wore his helmet and full uniform but did not participate. Instead, he stood near coaches clapping his together.
Saban said McClellan couldn’t “do a lot” in practice this week after he left last weekend’s Iron Bowl on crutches. As of Thursday, Saban deemed McClellan “questionable.”
McClellan is UA’s lead rusher with 803 yards and six touchdowns. If he can’t play, follow senior Roydell Williams and second-year player Jam Miller will be tasked with backfield duties. Freshman Justice Haynes has also seen the field more in recent weeks and could be a factor in his home state return.
Meanwhile, the Bulldogs dealt with injuries to Brock Bowers (ankle) Ladd McConkey (ankle), Rara Thomas (foot) and guard Tate Ratledge (knee). Bowers and Thomas were seen on the field and went through drills and ran routes.
One of the best offensive weapons in the country, Bowers has caught six touchdowns and 51 receptions, averaging 73.4 yards per game. McConkey (418) and Thomas (383) are fourth and fifth, respectively, in receiving yards.
Bowers has missed three games this season and was held out of last week’s rivalry game against Georgia Tech. So was McConkey, a junior limited to 26 catches and two touchdowns. Thomas has started 11 of 12 games and is a native of Eufaula, Alabama.
Ratledge was able to participate in one-on-one practice during the week, Smart said in his final press conference before game time. Listed behind Ratledge on UGA’s depth chart is redshirt sophomore Dylan Fairchild.
